WHAT'S GOING ON IN ROTARY AND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD - November 1, 2024
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We started our Rotary year stressing service, fun, and fellowship. October has zeroed-in on these objectives.
Thanks to the organizing efforts of Nancy Bailey, we had a wonderful Fashion Show in support of Nyanyas of Niagara - this wonderful grassroots organization was created in 2007 and is one of more than 240 grandmother groups across Canada raising money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign. Since their group's inception, the Nyanyas have raised $124,334 for the foundation, adding to a total of more than $21 million raised to provide food, housing, school fees, grief counselling and more to grandmothers and their grandchildren in 15 sub-Saharan African countries, supporting women and girls through grassroots organizations in their communities.
Towards the end of October, we had 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'. Jan and Brian hosted one group; Jeannie and Lee hosted another. These were lively and enjoyable dinners that allowed Rotarians to get to know each just a little bit better. If you missed this one, keep your eyes open for a spring rerun.
And of course we focused on supporting RI's efforts to end polio, including a rain-soaked 'walk' that ended up with a gathering at the Sandtrap Pub & Grill.
We continue to have well-attended lunch meetings on Tuesdays - please make those a feature of your weekly calendar. We rely on each of you to make our Rotary Club vibrant and relevant.
Let's have a great November - Jamie.
p.s. November 14 sip and savour at the Knight's, 2002 York Road, from 4:00 to 6:00 - Please send me an email at jknight@filion.on.ca to let me know you are coming.

RECENT EVENTS
Our Rotary club has been busy during the month of October.
Along with the many good works we financially support through our fundraisers, we had a few hands-on volunteer opportunities, a social event and a couple of fundraisers.
On October 15, The Rotary Fashion Show featuring fashions by Tango Boutique, successfully raised funds to split between the Nyanyas of Niagara, part of 240 groups supporting the ‘Grandmothers to Grandmothers’ campaign through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, to raise money for grandmothers in sub-Saharan African countries, raising their grandchildren because their own children have died of AIDS and local charities.
On October 19, club members joined Land Care Niagara at Paradise Grove, on the Niagara Parkway, to help plant a token number of the 1,200 trees our club funded through a portion of the 2023 Holiday House Tour ticket sales. This donation was to offset the carbon footprint of the HHT event. The day was sunny, but the ground was hard!
On October 27, our ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ social took place. Those in attendance at Brian Carberry’s and Jan Van Haren’s home, and at Lee and Jeannie Manning’s home had a wonderful evening of good food and fellowship.
On October 29, our club participated in Rotary International’s World Polio Day, by collecting pledges for a 'Stroll for Polio'. To date $10,073 has been raised. Our donation will be matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation, increasing our contribution to End Polio to $30,219!
Our members are rarely on the receiving end of the many organizations we support. But recently, Jason Lalonde’s stepson, Charlie, required hospitalization not once, but twice in the Benny Marotta Hospital in St. Catharines. In both cases, the family was grateful for the newly opened Ronald McDonald Room that provides respite for the families of children who are hospitalized. Our club donated $10,000 towards this Room. Charlie is doing fine and is home again.
YOUTH EXCHANGE
Brazilian "son" Pietro Zilio with some of his host 'moms'. Pietro was our inbound student in 2008-2009. This was his 3rd visit since then. Youth Exchange is the gift that keeps on giving.
