Food Security in the Niagara Region
Tuesday November 23

Past President Ken welcomed everyone to the luncheon meeting, which was held at Spirit in Niagara Distillery.

Amanda Ali was the meeting’s guest speaker.  Amanda is the Food Security Project Coordinator for United Way Niagara.  She was joined by Erin Riseing, Program Coordinator for the Niagara Community Garden Network.  Amanda gave a comprehensive presentation about Food Security, Food Sovereignty and Food Justice.  In Niagara alone, 60,000 people struggle to afford healthy food.  More than 20,000 people visited a food bank in the last year.  1 in 4 families spend 30% of their income on shelter/housing putting a strain on their access to food.  To combat the problem of food insecurity, Amanda briefly outlined 6 initiatives in Niagara: the Niagara Food Security Network, the Collective Impact Project, the Community Food Asset Map, the Niagara Community Garden Network, Pop-Up Produce Markets, and the Greenhouse Program (comprised of 6 complete greenhouses plus another 5 for springtime).

Members asked how they could get involved to help.  Amanda responded that individuals may volunteer their time or money, along with donating healthy food to any one of the above initiatives.

By the end of Amanda’s presentation, Rotarians had a better understanding of food insecurity in Niagara, and how they could assist.

Jeannie Manning also gave a presentation on the ‘Proposed Donation to the planned NoTL Museum Expansion’.  At the end it, Jeannie made the following motion: ‘To pledge $25,000 toward the NOTL Museum expansion, payable in 5 years, contingent on the museum raising $1.7 million to be eligible for the Provincial Grant; $5,000 will be earmarked from the CSC annual budget each year to fulfil our commitment.’ The Motion was seconded and approved by Club Members attending this meeting.
