Last week April 6th meeting-

NOTL Community Wellness Commitee-

Cindy Grant has lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake for over 11 years, after moving from Toronto where she worked in the healthcare industry for many years.  She has been a volunteer with several organizations and groups within the community since moving here including as Chair of the Town Community Wellness Committee, Treasurer and Board Member of NOTL Community Palliative Care Service and on the Boards of the Niagara North Family Health Team and Newark Neighbours.  Volunteering is important to Cindy as a tangible and vital component of any community and its social connectedness and, personally, as a way of ‘giving back’.

The Community Wellness Committee is an Official Committee of the Town Council.
  • To define ‘wellness’, the Wellness Committee used an index from The University of Waterloo.  It includes 9 categories of recommendations of wellness:
    1. Communication: includes information on vaccine clinics, how to access getting the vaccine.  Noted that all information on the vaccine is technology driven, and yet some people don’t want to use the internet.
    2. Environment: discussed bird bangers; Environment Advisory Committee established to advise the town.
    3. Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety: consultant is developing a multi-year, multi-modal ‘transportation master plan’.
    4. Housing Options: the issue is no alternative supportive housing options are available in NoTL.
    5. Transportation Services: on demand, point-to-point transit run exists from the Old Town to Virgil and Glendale; expected to expand to include service to St. Davids and Queenston.
    6. Lifelong Learning: the Library is conducting virtual learning series; and possibly partnering with a third age learning Niagara group based in St. Catherines.
    7. Lifelong Physical Activity: currently limited due to covid.
    8. Social Connectedness: currently limited due to covid.
    9. Health Services: expansion of after-hours has been requested, new medical centre is expected to be ready in early 2022.
  • Other Concerns the Wellness Committee is discussing:
    • Open spaces, parks
    • Funds for homecare, community-based organizations
  • Other Comments by Cindy:
    • There are regular articles in ‘The Local’ newspaper by Dr. Chambers that are excellent.
    • Free rides are available to go to a Covid vaccination.  Just look under ‘Community Support Services of Niagara’.
    • Housing and transportation are regional issues.
    • Most of the Niagara region is primarily focussed on getting the covid vaccine rolled out.
    • Patricia Murenbeeld suggested our club could organize a group of drivers that could take people for their covid vaccines.
    • Cindy expressed an interest in joining the Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Updates:

  • Rotary Logo: Jolanta Janny Kudlats and Greg Fedoryn discussed the use of the Rotary Logo.  Specifically, only the black/blue/white logo is to be used.  Jolanta has created Rotary templates, and Greg has put them (along with virtual background options) on the Club-Runner website.  Just go to our club’s Rotary website, click on Club Documents, and then click on 2021 Rotary Logos, and then finally click on the logo you wish to use.  There are many logos to choose from!
